    Sleep Lab/Environmental Psychology Lab

    Two Areas of Exploration

The work of the lab focuses on two primary areas: sleep and effort and environmental psychology.

The first area focuses on the impact of sleep deprivation and fatigue on next day performance and effort. This year we have been exploring the role of sleep and fatigue on tasks that involve effort including social activities and the use of heuristics. We have been preparing a new sleep deprivation study that will further explore the the role of sleep loss on social perception, social interaction and on the use energy saving strategies.

The second area focuses on the human interaction with the environment, how people understand natural resource depletion and climate change, and how attitudes and behaviors regarding environmental protection change over time. Recent work in the lab includes a prospective study examining attitudes and behaviors concerning environmental sustainability, an assessment of the impact of a nurturing prime on environmentally related behaviors, and the how face-to-face contact in comparison to social media influences environmentally protective actions.

    How Our Lab Functions

Our lab includes post-graduate and undergraduate students who work together to develop and run new studies. We have weekly lab meetings at which each of our lab members shares updates concerning their study.

Generally, teams of two co-principal investigators are responsible for reviewing the literature and bringing a new study to the attention of our group. Once a study has been proposed and feedback from the lab has been received, the team writes an HRPP (IRB) proposal. The team organizes all of the research materials, trains other members of the lab to work as research assistants and oversees the running of participants. The teams analyze data and prepare posters or paper for presentation and publication.

The lab is structured so that all research assistants working in the lab are resources for other members of the lab. Students who make significant contributions to a team project are invited to become co-authors on manuscripts to be submitted for presentation and publication.

    Lab News

Three students in our lab are current NSF-Research Experience for Undergraduates award winners.

The Baruch College NSF-REU program has been renewed for another three years. To apply for the REU program, please go to the REU site.
