    Japanese Minor

Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature

Proficiency in Japanese language and literature is increasingly an important advantage in business, teaching, translation, and other professional careers.

The Japanese Program offers courses from elementary to advanced levels with instruction in 4 important language skills—i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Intermediate- and upper-level courses also include activities such as reading short stories and articles, exploring Japanese cultural productions and artifacts through multimedia, and engaging in discussions on current social, cultural, and historical topics.

    Minor Requirements:

Students who choose to develop their intellectual abilities in Japanese may select two courses at the 3000-level or above from the Japanese section of the department’s course offerings, followed by a 4000-level capstone course.

Effective Fall 2024 (officially declared 6/10/24 or later):

    • Any 4000-level course in Japanese (JPN) may serve as the minor capstone.
    • These courses are taught in Japanese.

Summer 2024 or earlier (officially declared prior to 6/10/24):

    • Any of the following courses may serve as the minor capstone: any 4000-level course in Japanese (JPN), AAS 4005; AAS/JPS 4905; AAS/JPS 4906; or AAS/JPS 4907 / JPS 4907 (formerly CMP 4905, 4906, and 4907).
    • AAS, CMP, and Japanese Studies (JPS) courses are taught in English.

For more information on Japanese studies at Baruch, visit the program’s blog.

Students are expected to complete the minor requirements in place at the time they are officially accepted into their programs. Please review the College Bulletin for the relevant academic year.
