    Japanese Studies minor

    Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature

    The minor in Japanese Studies provides students with a general knowledge of Japanese history, culture, literature, and arts in the English language. The minor requires the completion of three courses in Japanese studies at the 3000-level or above, with at least one of them from among the following capstone courses: JPS/AAS/CMP 4905, JPS/AAS/CMP 4906, or JPS/AAS/FLM/CMP 4907.

    Requirements for the Minor

    Students are required to take ONE of the following capstone courses: 

    JPS/AAS 4905 Language, Literature, and Culture of Japan (formerly CMP 4905)

    JPS/AAS 4906 Critical Approaches to Japanese Popular Culture (formerly CMP 4906)

    JPS/AAS/FLM 4907 Film and Moving Image Culture in Japan (formerly CMP 4907)

    Take two courses:

    JPS/AAS 4905 Language, Literature, and Culture of Japan (formerly CMP 4905)

    JPS/AAS 4906 Critical Approaches to Japanese Popular Culture (formerly CMP 4905)

    JPS/AAS/FLM 4907 Film and Moving Image Culture in Japan (formerly CMP 4905)

    AAS 4900 Critical Issues in Asian and Asian American Studies

    HIS 4900 Capstone Course: In Search of History*

    HIS/AAS 3345 Asian American History

    HIS/AAS 3853 The Emergence of Modern Japan

    PHI 3180/AAS 3180 – Philosophies from Japan

    POL/AAS 3346 The Rise of Asia in World Affairs

    *Students may use this course if the topic is relevant to the minor.

    Students may petition one course from other campuses, universities, or study abroad programs as an elective to fulfill requirements; please contact the Program Director.

    Students are expected to complete the minor requirements in place at the time they are officially accepted into their programs. Please review the College Bulletin for the relevant academic year.
