Ad Hoc Major in Financial Psychology

    Department of Psychology

Financial Psychology is a growing interdisciplinary field of study that explores the various economic and psychological theories and research findings that impact our financial decisions and personal finance behaviors. The Arts and Sciences Ad-Hoc Major in Financial Psychology represents a synergy of psychology, economics, and finance coursework that is designed to prepare students interested in careers in financial planning, financial advising, and related fields.

The recommended course sequence provides students with both a theoretical and practical foundation in the economic forces that drive both markets and human financial behavior, as well as the psychological factors that contribute to individuals’ attitudes, traits, and behaviors that influence their fiscal decisions and relationship to money. Careers in consumer-facing roles in the financial services industry often require critical people skills that can be provided by a strong foundation in psychology, including excellent communication skills, knowledge of basic counseling skills, and knowledge of stress management and emotional support skills.

Students must have overall GPAs of 3.0 or higher to be officially accepted into this ad hoc major.
