Psychology
Department of Psychology
The study of psychology familiarizes students with the scientific study of mind and behavior. This discipline relies on methods ranging from simple observation to rigorous experimentation. Its subjects include learning and human development, what motivates us, how we perceive the world, how we respond intellectually and emotionally, and how these processes change throughout life and integrate into the personality under social influences.
As a Major
A major in Psychology includes courses that apply to a variety of practical settings, including the workplace, clinical, legal, and school environments. In fulfilling the department requirement for courses in related departments, we recommended that students electing to major in psychology select appropriate courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, computer methodology, sociology, and philosophy. Many other electives in the social sciences and humanities, however, will be accepted. A program must be planned in consultation with a Department of Psychology advisor.
As a Minor
The Department of Psychology offers one overallĀ Tier III minorĀ specialization in general psychology. Two courses should be selected with an advisor’s guidance at the 3000-level or above (6 credits), and a capstone course (3 credits). The capstone course in psychology is Evolution of Modern Psychology (PSY 4012).
The minor is organized into four specializations:
- Industrial psychology
- Educational psychology
- Experimental/research
- Clinical/counseling/pre-med
