    The Antisemitism Studies Lab

The Antisemitism Studies Lab holds as its mission the need to educate, create understanding, support research, and address the pressing challenges of antisemitism locally, nationally, and globally. The goal of the Antisemitism Studies Lab is to advance the field of antisemitism studies through support of faculty research, student engagement, and public programming. Our aim is for Baruch College to successfully lead both pedagogically focused research and student engagement initiatives with a focus on antisemitism studies.

The urgency and need for creating opportunities of greater and deeper exchange and education around antisemitism is clear: in a world transformed by deep upheaval in the Middle East, and in a global society where social media often dictates warped understandings, the establishment of The AS Lab at Baruch College 1) advances and enhances research, student learning, engagement with and knowledge of the topic; 2) fosters broader understanding and tolerance; 3) charters and supports new cutting-edge scholarship in various domains and disciplines related to antisemitism; and 4) offers larger public opportunities for engagement and education through programming and educational opportunities.

The AS Lab seeks to advance the field of antisemitism studies by taking a three-pronged approach focusing on these actionable areas of impact: research, students, and community engagement.

Affiliated faculty researchers who work to advance the study of contemporary antisemitism in different domains, specifically social media studies, communication and journalism, data science, public policy, and political sciences, will be welcomed to Baruch and/or over zoom for topic-focused research seminars, visiting lectures, or short-or-long term research.

Student engagement will focus on faculty/practitioner/student engaged research, internships, externships, and independent study opportunities that will animate a living, breathing laboratory of the history of antisemitism globally all the way to current iterations and expressions. The AS Lab will develop a rich set of learning opportunities that focus on antisemitism that students can engage in for credit, or as part of a compensated research assistantship.

The AS Lab will engage New York City community partners to provide students with outside classroom internship learning experiences. These partnerships would empower Baruch students by offering them both professional training and an invaluable learning experience offering tools to address practices of exclusion, hate, and disinformation. The AS Lab will also work to cultivate partnerships with organizations that engage with antisemitism as part of a larger mission. These partnerships will empower Baruch students by offering them both professional training and an invaluable learning experience offering tools to address practices of exclusion, hate, and disinformation.

This laboratory will provide students from Zicklin School of Business, Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, and Weissman School of Arts & Sciences, with foundational understanding of antisemitism and the many ways in which its existence poses a threat to tolerance, civil discourse, and democracy in American society.

The AS Lab is grateful to the Laterman Family Foundation, who provided the seed funding for its establishment, as well as the Herbert Simon Family Foundation and Erick Kirsch who have generously contributed towards the Lab.
